Until recently, most non-Hispanic whites distinguished between "American" and "ethnic" food, and encountered the latter only in "ethnic" restaurants. Results from a national household survey of 1,389 Black, White, and Latino adolescents (aged 10-17 yrs) show that although socioeconomic and demographic characteristics alone explained drug use differences between Latinos and non-Latino Whites, the differences between Black and White adolescents could not be explained by either structural or functional differences in the family.
